Students in the Greek capital city of Athens threw stones and firebombs at a police station on Thursday extending the violence that has spread across the country following the shooting death of a teenager on Saturday.
Rioting began almost immediately after 15-year-old Alexandros Griogropoulos was shot and killed by a police officer. Over the next five days hundreds of buildings across the country were damaged or destroyed and cars set afire as protestors demanded the government resign.
At last one prison was injured in the most recent violence that occurred near the city’s main university.
The police officer who shot Griogropoulos has been arrested as has a second officer who is considered an accomplice. Epaminondas Korkoneas has denied targeting the teenager, saying he was defending himself when a large group descended on his patrol car. He fired a warning shot and Griogropoulos was hit by a ricochet.
Government officials are said to be weighing the option of imposing a state of emergency to halt the violence.
