DePuy ASR Hip Failure Rate May Be as High as 49%, Says British Orthopedists’ Group

The DePuy hip failure rate of the ASR XL Acetabular System may be higher than originally reported, possibly up to four times higher than what DePuy previously cited in its DePuy hip recall, according to a statement by the British Hip Society and British Orthopaedic Association. The statement claimed that four United Kingdom surgeons’ data on the ASR XL Acetabular System revealed that within four years, 21% of patients implanted with the device required revision surgery; as many as 49% of patients needed to undergo a second hip procedure within six years, the study says. Due to the higher-than-expected DePuy hip failure rate, patients experiencing problems with the recalled hip implants may have legal recourse. In August 2010, a DePuy hip recall was issued after a study revealed that more patients than expected who were implanted with the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System experienced pain and other symptoms which required a second hip procedure, also known as a corrective surgery. Specifically, the data revealed that within five years, approximately 12% of patients with the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients with the ASR total hip replacement needed a revision surgery. Patients who experienced problems with the replacements implicated by the DePuy hip recall reported pain, swelling and difficulty walking among their symptoms. Although normal following a hip implant surgery, these symptoms may indicate hip implant loosening, fracture or dislocation should they come back or persist.

Patients who have experienced DePuy hip failure or other problems with the recalled ASR devices may have legal recourse. Several DePuy hip lawsuits have already been filed, and patients who elect to take legal action may be able to make a claim for medical bills and other damages resulting from their DePuy hip problems.
