The Chicago Bears (7-6) will be hosting the New Orleans Saints (7-6) on Thursday night in what is being considered a must-win by each team if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Bears are currently sitting a game behind the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North with three games left on their schedule. Chicago would likely have to win their division if they were to make the playoffs and Thursday night’s matchup is critical.
Chicago has posted a 4-2 record at home including last week’s pounding of the Jacksonville Jaguars and they’ll be facing a Saints squad that has struggled on the road, posting a 1-5 mark away from New Orleans.
For New Orleans a loss on Thursday night would all but end their season as they chase a wild card playoff spot. While the Saints are 7-6 they remain fourth in the clogged NFC South and will need a lot of help if they are to find themselves in postseason play.
Fortunately for the Saints their win last week over the Atlanta Falcons indicated that when Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are functional out of the back field they are a tough team to defend. That being said the Saints collected 184 yards on the ground against the Falcons but they won’t be facing the NFL’s #22 rushing defense on Thursday, the Bears are #6 in the NFL in that department, #3 in the NFC.
That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t be tested as the Saints feature the NFL’s #1 offense due in large part to the arm of Drew Brees. New Orleans averages 405.9 yards per game with 310 of those yards coming through the air. Chicago doesn’t exactly own a shut down secondary as they rank #28 in pass defense and they will almost certainly be tested.
Whoever wins on Thursday night will keep a playoff berth in sight as both teams have very winnable games left on their schedule. For the Saints, they’ll travel to face the Detroit Lions before hosting the Carolina Panthers in New Orleans where they are 6-1 on the year. Chicago still has Green Bay at home before wrapping up on the road against the Houston Texans.
The Bears also have the good fortune of seeing the Vikings schedule which includes the NFC West leading Arizona Cardinals, the Atlanta Falcons and the NFC East leading New York Giants.
Kickoff for Thursday night’s game is set for 8:15 p.m. ET.
