Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was named the 2008 Maxwell Award winner on the Home Depot/ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday.
Tebow became the first two-time Maxwell winner since 1953 after winning the award last season, along with the coveted Heisman Trophy in 2007. Both awards are given the most outstanding college football player in the nation.
Tebow faced stiff competition against Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, who won the Davey O'Brien Award. Tebow and McCoy are finalists for the 2008 Heisman Trophy, along with Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, has an opportunity to become the first two-time Heisman winner since Griffin. Tebow led the Gators to the SEC Championship and is considered one of the best leaders in the nation.
Tebow was also named the Disney Spirit Award for community service during the College Football Awards. During the season, Tebow was named First Team All-SEC and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.
Tebow leads the Gators into the BCS National Championship Game against Bradford and the Sooners on January 8 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL.
Tebow has completed 174-of-268 passes for 2,515 yards for 28 TDs and just two interceptions. He ran for 564 yards and 12 TDs. He is fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (175.45) and leads an offense that is No. 1 in the SEC in rushing, scoring and total yards.
His teammate Brandon Spikes was a finalist for the Dick Butkus Award for the nation's top linebacker, but it was given to Rey Maualuga from USC.
