Robbie Gould kicked the game-tying field goal with two seconds remaining in regulation and then connected on a 35-yard field goal in overtime to give the Chicago Bears (8-6) a 27-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints (7-7) to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Danieal Manning got the Bears on the board instantly as he returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. The Saints would tie the game at 7-7- early in the second quarter when Drew Brees hooked up with Pierre Thomas on a 2-yard toss but the Bears responded with a one-yard touchdown run from Matt Forte and a Kyle Orton 6-yard keeper with 55 seconds remaining in the half.
It looked like the Bears had the game wrapped up as New Orleans was struggling to move the ball but the second half was a different story. Thomas brought the Saints to within 21-14 in the third quarter when he scored on a 42-yard run and Garrett Hartley cut the deficit to 21-17 on a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth.
After Orton was picked off Brees hit Marques Colston on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 3:10 left in the game and New Orleans was up 24-21. Orton managed to put together a last minute drive that resulted in Gould’s 28-yard game-tying field goal.
Chicago won the toss and elected to receive and after Roman Harper was flagged on a pass interference call on a deep pass from Orton to Devin Hester the game-winning field goal was setup for Gould and he delivered.
The win keeps the Bears alive in the NFC North where they are now half a game behind the Minnesota Vikings. Chicago still has green Bay at home and they end the season at the Houston Texans.
