Narconon Outlines Loss Of An Artist To Opiate Addiction

After a struggle with opiate addiction and many tries at rehab, rock star loses his life.

This past week music legend Mike Starr lost his life to opiate addiction. The musician helped to start the group Alice In Chains in 1987 which was known as an alternative heavy metal machine with many hit songs. Starr was let go from the band in 1993 as a result of his addiction. He appeared on Celebrity Rehab during its third season and returned back in the fourth season to help others.

Earlier this week Starr was found dead in his home in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Found with him were controlled substances, including Xanax and the painkiller Opana. Starr struggled with opiate and prescription drug addiction for many years as outlined during his time on Celebrity Rehab.

Narconon, a long-term drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that specializes in opiate addiction has seen the devastation that opiates have caused people everywhere. One of the most difficult aspects of opiate addiction is the number of people that end up losing their lives before they are able to get into an effective treatment program that could help them.

“One of the toughest things about opiate addiction is that most people consider it is an incurable disease,” says Derry Hallmark, Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor and Senior Director for Expansion at Narconon Arrowhead. “In order to effectively treat it, people have to realize that not only is this not the case but that opiate addiction can be fully overcome with the right type of treatment.”

The Narconon drug rehab program has had great success with treating opiate addiction. The organization has been fully rehabilitating addicts for the last 46 years with a more than 70% success rate for permanent recovery.  Addicts are not given substitute drugs but partake in an intensive program that handles both the physical aspects of addiction and drug cravings as well as the mental and emotional components of the problem.

“We can and have fully rehabilitated people struggling with the most severe opiate addictions,” adds Hallmark. “There is a real solution for this that does not involve more drugs and gets results.”

Mike Starr was only 44 at the time of his death and just one of a long list of celebrities who have recently lost their lives to addiction. Statistics indicate that there are nearly 600,000 people in the United States who are struggling with opiate addiction.
