Indian authorities say 61 suspected Somali pirates were captured in the Arabian Sea over the weekend. Two Navy ships intercepted the pirates, who were using a hijacked Mozambican fishing vessel, about 695 miles off the coast of Kochi. Gunfire was exchanged before the pirates were captured.
Thirteen crew members of the Vega 5, which was hijacked last December, were also rescued. Authorities say the pirates had been using the Vega 5 as their mother vessel and had carried out several attacks in it.
The pirates are being taken to Mumbai to face charges. This is the third time this year the Indian navy has captured pirates and their hijacked vessels. A total of 43 pirates were previously captured in two separate navy operations.
