Just over a week after the sudden death of 16-year-old Michigan basketball star Wes Leonard, a South Texas high school has been hit with a similar tragedy. Roma High School student Robert Garza, 16, collapsed and died over the weekend during a basketball tournament.
The teen was playing with the Hoopters, a club team, in the AAU tournament on Saturday. He collapsed during a timeout and was rushed to the Brackenridge Hospital in Austin where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
The Travis County medical examiner’s office says an autopsy was conducted, but it will take weeks to get test results back and determine the cause of death.
Leonard’s cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart. He collapsed on court after making the winning shot and clenching an undefeated record for Fennville High School.
