Antonio Banderas: 'Puss in Boots is a spaghetti western'

Antonio Banderas' 'Shrek' spin-off 'Puss in Boots' feels like a "spaghetti western".

The Spanish actor - who has voiced the swashbuckling cat in the four previous instalments about the titular ogre and his wife Princess Fiona - believes the forthcoming animation is very different to the other films and has an "epic and romantic" feel.

He said: "Finally after being a supporting character for many years, now he became the star of his own movie. It's different to 'Shrek', that's the first thing that I can tell you. He doesn't follow the same pattern.

"It has a certain feeling of western movies, spaghetti westerns, maybe, in Spain. Like, divided screens and zooms into the characters. It's epic and romantic and reflects about friendship."

Despite the serious feel, the 50-year-old star - who is best known for starring roles in 'Evita' and 'The Mask of Zorro' - reveals it will be "very funny" and allows him the chance to laugh at himself.

He said in a video for the official Golden Globes YouTube channel: "Basically it is a lot of fun, very, very funny. It has squeezed him as much as we can.

"In a way it's similar to characters I have done and it gives me the chance to laugh at myself a bit, which is very healthy, actually."

'Puss in Boots' is planned for release in late 2011.
