Heavy rain that began last Friday caused mudslides and floods across southern Brazil over the weekend. Some 31,000 people have been left homeless by the harsh weather. Civil defense officials say homes have been flooded or flattened by mudslides in at least three states.
Santa Catarina state was the hardest hit with more than 14,000 people fleeing their homes. State officials confirm a 25-year-old man was killed when his car was swept away in flood water. In Parana state, around 10,000 people left their damaged or destroyed homes behind. Authorities there say landslides have killed at least 3 people and left 1 person missing. Rio do Sul state also reported 7 deaths and 1 missing person. The state of Espirito Santo estimated more than 6,000 residents have been left homeless. No deaths were reported there.
