Cuban President Raul Castro has taken his first overseas trip in the capacity of his country’s top position, traveling to Venezuela to meet with Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez.
Raul Castro took the reins of the presidency earlier this year when his brother, long time leader Fidel Castro, stepped down following health problems.
Welcoming Castro to his country Chavez declared, “You, one of the men behind the great Cuban revolution. Your visit is an honor for us, Raul. We receive you and with you Fidel Castro and the Cuban people.”
Cuba is preparing to celebrate 50 years of independence in 2009, a revolution that occurred when Fidel took power in 1959.
Raul Castro was in Venezuela to sign bilateral deals. Before sitting down for talks Castro and Chavez visited the tomb of Simon Bolivar, a hero in Venezuela’s fight for independence.
