A year after posting a 4-6 record the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs reigned supreme in the world of Division II college football after knocking off the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 21-14 on Saturday to become national champions in their first ever appearance in the title game.
The victory completes a dramatic turnaround for the Bulldogs as they completed their season 15-0 under head coach Bob Nielson who returned to the sideline after four years as the school’s athletic director. For the Bearcats, the loss was their fourth straight in the national championship game. They had lost their last three by a combined 12 points.
Northwest Missouri State was done in by four turnovers as Minnesota Duluth built a 21-0 lead in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs scored on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Ted Schlafke to Tony Doherty in the first quarter, a 5-yard toss from Schlafke to Isaac Odim in the third and a 4-yard touchdown run from Odim early in the fourth.
The Bearcats climbed back into the game on an interception returned for a TD and a touchdown pass from Joel Osborn to Raphael Robinson with 1:36 left on the clock to put the score at 21-14.
On the ensuing onside kick it appeared as if the Bearcats recovered the ball but a referee quickly signaled Bulldogs ball and Minnesota Duluth was able to run the clock out for the Division II college football title.
