Turkmenistan Polls Closed in Parliamentary Elections

The polls have closed in Turkmenistan’s first parliamentary election since a new constitution was ratified under President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov earlier this year.

According to early estimates the voter turnout neared 90 percent as the people of Turkmenistan were looking to fill the 125-seat parliament from the 288 candidates running.

Berdymukhamedov has promised to end Turkmenistan’s relative isolation in the international community and he has called the democratic process of the parliamentary elections a step towards achieving that goal.

To ensure the validity of the vote international observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe were invited to monitor the process.
