Brett Favre threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, Thomas Jones rushed for 78 yards and a TD and the New York Jets (9-5) forced four turnovers including a game-winning 11-yard touchdown return on a fumble to beat the Buffalo Bills (6-8) 31-27 on Sunday to keep their AFC East title hopes alive.
The Jets built a 14-3 advantage in the first quarter as Jones scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and Favre hit Jerricho Cotchery on an 11-yard toss but the Bills responded in the second frame when J.P. Losman scored on a keeper from 8-yards out and then hit Steve Johnson on a 2-yard toss to put Buffalo up 17-14 with 2:05 left in the half. It looked like the Jets were positioning themselves for a game-tying field goal late in the half but Leon Washington found a hole and went 47 yards for a touchdown to give NY a 21-17 lead at the break.
Rian Lindell provided the only points of the third quarter as his 48-yard field goal brought the Bills to within one but Jay Feely gave the Jets their four-point cushion with a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth.
Buffalo then grabbed their first lead of the game on an 11-yard touchdown run from Fred Jackson with 5:30 left in the game and it looked like the Bills would hold on for the win as they had the ball with less than two minutes left in the game but Shaun Ellis collected a fumble and went 11-yards for a touchdown to put the Jets back in front and the NY defense held the lead.
The Jets kept their AFC East lead but the Dolphins remain in the hunt with an identical record and the New England Patriots are facing the Oakland Raiders and a win would place them at 9-5 as well.
