Philip Rivers threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns, Vincent Jackson had six catches for 89 yards and a TD and the San Diego Chargers (6-8) overcame three turnovers and an 18-point deficit in the second half to beat the Kansas City Chiefs (2-12) 22-21 to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Kansas City grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when they used Larry Johnson to throw a 4-yard toss to Tony Gonzalez and in the second quarter they went the more conventional route as Tyler Thigpen hit Dwayne Bowe on a one-yard pass for a 14-0 advantage. San Diego managed to get a Nate Kaeding 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the half to finally get on the board.
The Chiefs continued to look like they had complete control of the game as they scored on their opening drive of the second half when Thigpen found the endzone on a 3-yard keeper for a 21-3 lead but that would be the last time they would score as the Chargers began their comeback.
San Diego scored their first touchdown of the game when LaDainian Tomlinson punched it in from 6-yards out to climb to within 21-10 midway through the third.
The Chargers wouldn’t score again until there was 1:13 left in the game as Rivers hit Malcolm Floyd on a 4-yard toss but their two-point attempt failed and the score was 21-16. Kaeding then went with an onside kick and the Chargers recovered which set up a Rivers to Jackson 10-yard touchdown pass. Once again the Chargers failed to convert their two-point attempt but they had the 22-21 lead with 40 seconds left in the game.
Kansas City had one final shot to avoid the collapse but Connor Barth missed a 50-yard field goal and the Chargers had the dramatic win. San Diego still has a shot at winning the AFC West if they win out and the Denver Broncos lose their remaining games.
