Dominic Cheek, Top HS Shooting Guard, Commits to Villanova Wildcats

Dominic Cheek, the star shooting guard from St. Anthony (Jersey City, NJ), committed to Villanova this weekend, giving the Wildcats the nation's top recruiting class for 2009.

Cheek, a likely McDonald's All-American, averaged 12.3 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists per game last season as he helped to lead St. Anthony to the USA Today national championship. The Friars will begin their national and state title defense on Dec. 19.

Cheek, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound guard, selected Villanova over Kansas, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Memphis. Kansas, Pittsburgh and Rutgers each have a freshman on their roster that was a high school teammate of Cheek's last season: Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), Travon Woodall (Pitt), and Mike Rosario (Rutgers).

Memphis recently received a commitment from the nation's top-rated shooting guard, Xavier Henry from Putnam City (Oklahoma City, OK), which may have affected Cheek's decision.

Cheek, the 16th-ranked player in the nation by Rivals.com, becomes the third five-star prospect to commit to Villanova and head coach Jay Wright. Cheek will join two stars from Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD) in 6-9 forward Moustaphou Yarou (No. 14) and 6-8 forward Isaiah Armwood (No. 62), as well as Philly 6-1 point guard Maalik Wayns (No. 25).

Villanova will now move into the top spot for recruiting class, supplanting the North Carolina Tar Heels.

UNC, the current No. 1 team in the AP college basketball poll, have signed two five-star recruits (6-10 forward John Henson and 6-3 guard Dexter Strickland) and three four-star prospects (6-6 guard Leslie McDonald, 6-8 forwards Travis Wear and David Wear). All of UNC's future Tar Heels are in the top 70 on Rivals.com.

Cheek and Strickland (No. 17 by Rivals) are considered New Jersey's top players in the class of 2009. Cheek's Friars defeated Strickland and his St. Patrick (Elizabeth) team in the Tournament of Champions last season on their way to the state title.
