Zimbabwe Accuses Botswana of Plotting to Overthrow Robert Mugabe

The Zimbabwe government has accused Botswana of taking part in a plot to overthrow President Robert Mugabe. The accusations have been strongly denied by Botswana’s President Ian Khama as well as by Zimbabwe’s main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai.

According to Zimbabwe’s Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa there was evidence that the neighboring African country had been hosting military training camps for MDC rebels and that those rebels had been planning to launch an attack on Mugabe’s government.

Chinamasa was quoted as saying, “Botswana has availed its territory, material and logistical support to (the MDC) for the recruitment and military training of youths for the eventual destabilization of the country with a view of effecting illegal regime change.”

"We now have evidence that while (the MDC) were talking peace they have been preparing for war and insurgency, as well as soliciting the West to invade our country on the pretext of things like cholera.”

Zimbabwe has been hit hard by a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 800 people and health experts expect those numbers to climb as the country continues to suffer from a lack of clean water and abysmal sanitation conditions.

Mugabe, who has been in power since the country gained independence in 1980, has denied the reports of a cholera outbreak and declared it a plot by the West to justify an invasion
