Hollyoaks: The Sitcom?

'Hollyoaks' star Bronagh Waugh has written a sitcom.

The Irish actress - who plays loudmouth Cheryl Brady in the Channel 4 soap - revealed her own comedy series was commissioned by the BBC before she joined the cast of 'Hollyoaks', but had to be shelved because of budget cuts.

However, after gaining notoriety through playing bolshie blonde Cheryl, the star has "re-visited" the sitcom in the hope of seeing it re-commissioned.

She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "Comedy is something that I've always done and been interested in. I'm in the process of trying to get my own comedy sketch show commissioned. I'm just in the process of re-writing it - we got it into the development stage with the BBC about three years ago, just before I started 'Hollyoaks'.

"But then with budget cutbacks, they had to drop it while we were filming the pilot. Now I'm in Hollyoaks, funnily enough, they've started voicing their interest again. Perhaps because I'm more well-known.

"I did feel like I needed to leave it alone for a while and let it go because I'd put so much work into it and then it all got dropped at the last minute. I've just re-visited it recently and we're re-editing it and making the comedy more topical and updated. I would really like to try and get it off the ground again."

Bronagh has even roped in her 'Hollyoaks' co-stars - including Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste Hay - to appear in the "'Smack The Pony'-style" show, in the hope of getting the series off the ground.

She added: "I hope Channel 4 will be amenable to commissioning it. We've got an abundance of very talented people here at 'Hollyoaks' that I would really like to use for it. It would be great to use the 'Hollyoaks' cast and bring out the comedic sides to everyone.

"I've already asked Kieran Richardson to do it and he's said yes. A lot of the girls would be great, I'm going for a 'Smack The Pony' style thing - it's a very female-orientated thing but there's always parts for beautiful boys."
