Iraqis Take to Street Demanding Release of Journalist Who Threw Shoes at President George Bush

The journalist who hurled a pair of shoes at U.S. President George Bush during a news conference in Baghdad on Sunday has become a hero to many of his countrymen as thousands of Iraqis have taken to the streets demanding his release.

Muntadar al-Zaidi was tackled by security guards and arrested after he removed his shoes and threw them, one after the other, directly at Bush. The President managed to duck out of the way and later seemed to make light of it, telling reporters who asked about the attack that the shoes looked like they were a size 10.

While the Iraqi government condemned the act and said al-Zaidi had “harmed the reputation of Iraqi journalists and Iraqi journalism in general” the journalist had thousands of supporters who have called him a hero.

al-Zaidi screamed to Bush, “This is a farewell kiss, you dog. This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.”
