Matt Howard tipped in the ball for his team right before the buzzer to give the Butler Bulldogs a slim 60-58 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Thursday. The second round victory was the tenth straight win for the eight-seeded Bulldogs and ended a nine-game winning spree for the Monarchs.
Last year, Butler's run to the NCAA championship ended when they missed a buzzer beater against Duke. But this year, the last-second opportunity worked in their favor.
Howard and Shelvin Mack led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points each. Howard also contributed 8 rebounds and 1 block, while Mack turned in 7 assists. On the other side, Frank Hassell led the Monarchs in scoring with 20. Ben Finney also put in some good numbers for the Monarchs, recording 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
According to a report from the Associated Press, "the game featured 21 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six points."
