The lap-band procedure is a laparoscopic surgery wherein a plastic ring inflated with saline is placed around the top of the stomach. This band creates a small stomach pouch above the band while the rest of the stomach stays in its normal position for digestion.
“What this does is it forms kind of a small stomach with a larger stomach below,” explains Dr. Jayasaleen. “When the top of your stomach stretches is when you get the feeling of being full. This feeling of being full is actually the reason why a lot of people are overweight. They crave that full feeling and will eat until they get it.
During the procedure Dr. Jayasaleen will inflate the band with saline to decrease the channel size between the top of your stomach (which is now about the size of golf ball) and the bottom pouch to the size of a pencil. This narrow channel causes solid food to move more slowly, so patients are going to feel full sooner and stay full much longer. As a result these patients will eat less food to fill up on. In fact, patients who’ve had the procedure will feel full after only about 10 bites or one cup of food.
The lap-band surgery is actually a simple outpatient procedure and the safest of all the weight loss surgeries available. Dr. Jayasaleen is one of the most experienced lap-band surgeons in the country, having performed over 2,000 procedures since the band was first introduced in 2002.
It should be noted, however, that this procedure isn’t for people who are simply overweight. The lap-band procedure is reserved for people who are more along the lines of 100 lbs overweight or more. These are people who been through multiple diets and exercise programs and nothing has worked. The band is something, however, that can work for them.
“Surgery is always considered a last resort. The first step should always be to change how you eat and exercise,” says Dr. Jayasaleen. “Unfortunately, long-term studies on diet and exercise have shown after five years people will weigh more than they did when they first started an exercise and diet program. The only thing shown to consistently drop weight over the long term has been surgery.”
