While Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has declared the cholera outbreak in his country to be non-existent the United Nations has produced alarming numbers that the epidemic has claimed nearly 1,000 people and that death toll is likely to rise.
Zimbabwe still has no source for clean drinking water and their sanitation system is in shambles while the health care sector lacks the proper medication to treat patients. The South African Red Cross has sent medicine to the hardest hit areas but the UN has said the government will have to step up their efforts if they are to halt the cholera outbreak.
Mugabe addressed the nation on television Thursday and said the outbreak had been contained but that has been disputed by the UN.
On several occasion Mugabe has claimed that the cholera outbreak was introduced by the West who were trying to use it as a premise for invading.
The UN has warned that more than 60,000 cases of cholera could be a reality if the problems with water and sanitation aren’t remedied soon.
