Kentucky has often been regarded as the number one state for prescription narcotic abuse. However, statistics show that many other states aren’t far behind.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s recent study showed that, across the nation, there was a four-fold increase in admissions for narcotic pain killers as compared to the previous decade. The study notes that the increase was seen across every demographic with no regard to race, age, gender or socio-economic status.
“Narcotic abuse is so difficult to combat,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “After all, there truly are legitimate uses for narcotics, making them easy to acquire. The use of narcotics isn’t the evil; the abuse is the evil. There are some states in which it is easier than other places to obtain prescription painkillers. People will travel to those states, acquire several prescriptions and then head back to their state to sell or use those drugs. It’s an epidemic that is getting out of hand, and we need lawmakers to step in and take control by enacting laws that will protect the public. An interstate drug database would be ideal for this type of abuse.”
Statistics show that the cost of drug and narcotic abuse is over $484 billion annually, including increased healthcare costs, lost job wages, traffic accidents and crime.
