New York Times Says Libya Will Release 4 Journalists

In a report Friday, The New York Times reported Libyan government forces have their four missing journalists in custody and will release them. The newspaper cited comments made by Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, in an interview with Christiane Amanpour on Thursday. Gadhafi told Amanpour the journalists were detained by government forces, but will be freed.

Anthony Shadid, Stephen Farrell, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario were last heard from by New York Times editors on Tuesday morning. The Times contacted the Libyan government after receiving second hand reports the four were captured in Ajdabiya. "We have talked with officials of the Libyan government in Tripoli, and they tell us they are attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of our journalists. We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed,” executive editor Bill Kelly said Wednesday.
