Serena Williams has had a tough year, with one physical setback after another keeping her off the court and in recovery. On Wednesday, Williams told USA Today that she is "at the end of [her] rope."
"It's just been a tough year," said Williams, who cut her foot on a piece of glass last year after Wimbledon and then had to undergo two surgeries to treat the injury.
"I definitely have not been happy," Williams told the newspaper. "Especially when I had that second surgery [on my foot], I was definitely depressed. I cried all the time. I was miserable to be around."
Last month, to make matters worse, Williams had to deal with some serious blood clots in her lungs. She was ultimately hospitalized so that a grapefruit-sized hematoma could be removed from her stomach.
"What's going to make me happy is going on the court and holding up trophies, singles and doubles," said Williams, who has dropped to #11 in the world rankings.
Williams has not yet set a date for her highly anticipated return to the world of professional tennis, but she says that she may make a comeback as early as this summer.
"I don't know what's realistic," said Williams. "I really don't know. I haven't put a date on it yet."
