Arne Duncan Named as Education Secretary by President-Elect Barack Obama

Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago school system, has been named as the education secretary by President-elect Barack Obama.

Obama spoke briefly before announcing Duncan as his nominee telling reporters “When it comes to school reform, Arne is the most hands-on of hands-on practitioners.”

It was Duncan’s ability to integrate different philosophies in education into the Chicago school system and improved test scores and dropout rates that attracted Obama who said, “He's not beholden to any one ideology, and he's worked tirelessly to improve teacher quality.”

After being introduced Duncan stated, “No issue is more pressing than education. ... It is the civil rights issue of this generation.”
