The 1981 murder of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of “America’s Most Wanted” host John Walsh, has been solved as authorities in South Florida identified Ottis Toole as the killer.
Adam Walsh disappeared from a Sears department store at a Hollywood, Florida shopping mall on July 27, 1981 and two weeks later his severed head was found in a canal 120 miles from his home.
The police investigation that followed was considered botched by many as Toole admitted to the killing in 1983 but investigators dismissed his confession and never brought a case to trial. Toole had been serving time for several murders in 1996 when he made yet another confession, this time on his deathbed, to the Walsh murder.
Both John Walsh and his wife Reve Walsh were at the news conference on Tuesday where the police declared Adam Walsh’s killer to be Toole. John and Reve spoke briefly about the 27 years that have elapsed since Adam was murdered and the relief they now feel knowing that the case was finally closed and Toole was formally identified.
