A United States resolution seeking approval to allow countries to pursue Somali pirates on land as well as by sea has been unanimously passed by the United Nations Security Council.
The UN approval comes as countries continue to battle the growing problem of piracy off the coast of Somalia. Acts of piracy have largely gone unpunished as Somalia has lacked a national government since 1991 and have no means of halting the attacks.
According to the passed resolution countries can now use “all necessary measures” to stop pirate attacks, including land, sea and air. The resolution will be in effect for one year and countries will still have to ask permission from the transitional Somali government to enter Somalia.
On Tuesday two more ships were attacked and seized by pirates, an Indonesian tugboat and a Turkish cargo ship.
