An 80-year-old woman and her 16-year-old grandson were pulled alive from rubble in Miyagi Prefecture on Sunday. Rescue workers discovered them after hearing the teen boy call out for help. Authorities say the pair had been trapped in the remains of their home ever since the earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
The official death toll in the disaster was 8,450 on Monday. Authorities expect the toll to rise to more than 20,000 as thousands of people remain missing. Officials believe some 15,000 people may be dead in Miyagi Prefecture alone.
Meanwhile, workers were evacuated from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Monday after a leaking reactor began producing smoke. The evacuation caused a setback in efforts to restore power to the reactors and their cooling systems.
