Addiction Exploited for Publicity?

Has addiction gone from being a negative to a pathway to success in Hollywood?

Has the stigma of addiction done a complete 180-degree turn? In the past, those in the public eye were afraid to admit they struggled with drug or alcohol abuse for fear of the negative impact on their career. But in today’s “reality TV” culture, serious problems like addiction can lead to massive media coverage – and a higher profile in attention-hungry Hollywood.

Charlie Sheen is cashing in on his issues with a new sold-out road show. And White House party-crasher Michaele Salahi recently signed on to do VH1’s Celebrity Rehab, before being released from the show because experts found she didn't have an addiction.

Why would someone without an addiction issue want to enter rehab? That remains to be seen, but Salahi's manager was quick to insist the network knew that was the case all along. Sheen, meanwhile, managed to keep his job on the top-rated sitcom Two and a Half Men after drug-related legal and personal issues, only being let go after public rants against the show’s creator and the network.

While the recovery community has viewed the lessening of the stigma of addiction as a positive and healthy change, this new development could make addiction seem like something to strive for. It’s a danger that parents and educators need to be aware of.
