Barack Obama Named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year”

Time magazine has named President-elect Barack Obama as its annual “Person of the Year” for displaying “the confidence to sketch an ambitious future in a gloomy hour.”

Since declaring his intentions to seek the presidency Obama has become a fixture in global media and his rise from a relative unknown to the Democratic Party leader has been documented at every turn. His victory over Republican candidate John McCain in the 2008 presidential elections solidified his message of hope and change in a time where distrust and stagnation appeared to dominate the American psyche.

In recognizing his impact on the global scene Time magazine noted, “His is an extraordinary story which has captured the imagination of people from Jakarta to Dublin to Iowa to New Hampshire.”

Time magazine has been issuing the annual “Man of the Year” award since 1927 but in 1999 it shifted to “Person of the Year” to be more inclusive. While the recognition is typically recognized as an honor the distinction is not always bestowed upon those considered honorable. Among those who have received the “Man of the Year” award: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini.
