Shayna West, Pregnant Woman who Survived Failed Parachute Fall, Opens Up

Shayna West was 2-weeks pregnant with her survived a skydiving accident three years ago. West, 24, talked about her life since the accident on Tuesday’s ‘Today’ show.

West went on her sixth skydiving trip October 9, 2005 but things took a bad turn when her main parachute failed to open properly. She attempted to open her emergency reserve parachute, but that also failed.

West was headed towards a parking lot below and hit the pavement at 50 miles per hour. She suffered multiple broken bones in her face, a broken leg and broken pelvis.

Once in the emergency room, West found out she was 2-weeks pregnant. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Tanner, nine months later.

“He was so small that he was really well protected. The next concern was all the medications and surgeries I went through,” West reveals.  

Earlier this year, West gave birth to her second child, a daughter Bridget.

West has undergone several facial reconstruction surgeries and is gearing up for her last one. "They are going to put in implants to get rid of the hollow spots under my eyes, they will get rid of my scars and straighten out my nose,” she explains.

St. John’s Hospital in Arkansas is donating their services and products for the surgery.
