Kenya’s President and PM Sign Deal for Election Violence Tribunal

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have signed an agreement that would set up an election violence tribunal that would bring to justice those responsible for the deadly violence that paralyzed the country during the December 2007 presidential elections.

Kibaki and Odinga squared off in that election but following the results the two agreed to a power-sharing deal that formed a coalition government.

The tribunal would try individuals believed to be responsible for the clashes that left more than 1,500 dead and more than 300,000 fleeing their homes.

It is now up to parliament to set up the tribunal and start the hearings process by March. If that timeline is not met then a list of suspects will be handed over to the International Criminal Court.
