Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has been named agricultural secretary by President-elect Barack Obama, becoming the fourth former Democratic presidential candidate to become part of his administration.
Vilsack, 58, served two-terms as Iowa’s governor beginning in 1998 and become made a name for himself on the national level for pushing alternative energy solutions and green jobs as a means to improve conditions in rural regions of the country.
Following his second term Vilsack announced his candidacy for the presidency in Nov. 2006 but by Feb. 2007 he ended his bid due to an inability to raise money. Shortly after dropping out of the presidential race Vilsack endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Clinton has also been named to the Obama administration, tapped as his Secretary of State. Along with Vilsack and Clinton, Joe Biden (Vice President) and Bill Richardson (head of Commerce Department) are former 2008 presidential candidates who are now part of the new Cabinet.
Obama also named Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as his Interior Secretary on Wednesday. Salazar will be responsible for overseeing oil and gas drilling on public land as well as manage parks and wildlife refuges.
