Somali Parliament Members Vote to Begin Impeachment Proceedings Against President

Calling Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf a “stumbling block to peace,” members of parliament have voted to begin impeachment proceedings against the controversial leader.

Yusuf enraged MPs when he made a unilateral decision to replace Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein with Mohamed Mahamud Guled. Members of parliament said Yusuf needed their approval to make the move and have since voted to keep Hussein as prime minister.

Parliament has accused Yusuf of a number of violations including illegally printing money, failing to push a peace process and behaving like a dictator.

The decision to impeach will require Yusuf to appear before parliament to defend himself yet it will take a two-thirds majority for the impeachment to actually take place.

Yusuf has disappointed many in Somalia who thought he would build a bridge to peace in the war-torn country. Instead they are no closer to peace as Islamist militants continue to hold many territories in southern Somalia.

Many fear their presence could expand even further when Ethiopian troops pull out of Mogadishu in two weeks.
