Every year roughly 30,000 people with cancer go in search of a bone marrow donor and only 3,000 will find a match. Part of the problem is the cost associated with bone marrow donor registration. As 2008 comes to a close, The Love Hope Strength Foundation (LHS), a Denver-based global cancer-fighting organization, is spending much of the holiday season working with DKMS, the world’s largest marrow donor center, and Colorado businesses to register volunteers to the national bone marrow donor database, at no cost. Companies such as Johnston Wells, Lockheed Martin, Cambiar Investments, The Jet Hotel, and Martini Ranch have opened their doors to help provide a solution to the thousands of people who cannot find a match each year. The registration takes under five minutes and requires only a cheek swab and completion of a donor consent form. Unlike previous years, if the donors are found to be a match they can help save a life with a simple outpatient procedure.
“This is a season where people are feeling generous, but not everyone has the resources to donate money in this the economic climate. Giving a few minutes to join the international bone marrow registry is an easy way for people and corporations to make a positive impact without opening their wallets,” said LHS Executive Director, Shannon Foley.
The next marrow donor registration event occurs December 18th from 10am-2pm with Sound Surgical Technologies, located at 357 South McCaslin Blvd. in Louisville, Colorado.
