Kate Hudson says becoming a mother made her look for "a different kind of love."
The 31-year-old actress - who has a seven-year-old son Ryder with her ex-husband Chris Robinson and is now expecting a child with Muse rocker Matt Bellamy - claims relationships get more difficult to "balance" after you have a child because your priorities change.
She explained: "I was looking for a different kind of love because all of a sudden my child became my priority. Then you have to balance out the relationship."
The 'A Little Bit of Heaven' star also admits that staying on good terms with Ryder's father Chris, who she divorced in October 2007, takes "work".
She told LOOK magazine: "My ex - it's as much work as the marriage [was]!
"He's got his family who are lovely and it's more about timing and scheduling. That becomes the focus."
The blonde beauty says her relationship with Matt works well because it is based on qualities she never considered important before.
She said: "Respect, honesty, a full partnership, compromise - all the great stuff. I think that's what makes love last.
"I'm not a psychologist, but for me [love] became more adult and I wasn't looking for the passionate crazy love. The things that I wanted in a partnership were different to when I was younger and didn't have children."
