Rep. Ray Lahood (R-IL) was appointed the Transportation Secretary by President-elect Barack Obama, according to reports on Wednesday.
LaHood becomes the second Republican to be added to Obama's cabinet after he kept Robert Gates as Defense Secretary from the Bush Administration.
The selection of LaHood was reported after Obama announced former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as Agriculture Secretary and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado to head the Interior Department.
LaHood, 63, served 14 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing an area that encompasses Peoria, IL. He is considered a centrist member of the GOP.
LaHood, Vilsack and Salazar must receive Senate confirmation before taking their posts.
In addition, Mary Schapiro was selected to head the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), while Michigan Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm is the front-runner to win the Labor Secretary nomination.
