San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan sprained his ankle, and the team says they do not know when he will be back.
Duncan, 34, sprained his left ankle on Monday night, just four minutes into the Spurs' 111-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors. After making a short jumpshot, the Spurs big man landed awkwardly and then collapsed beneath the basket.
Duncan passed an MRI on Tuesday with no signs of structural damage to his ankle. The Spurs will not know the timeline for Duncan's return until later this week, but they do know that he will miss the Spurs' next three games.
"It structurally looks good," said general manager R.C. Buford on Tuesday. "We will have a better idea of what the timeline is in the next 48 hours."
According to a report from the Associated Press, Buford says Duncan's ankle is somewhere between a grade 1 and a grade 2 sprain. Buford said team doctors are waiting for the swelling to subside in order to see how the ankle will respond to early treatment.
In Duncan's absence, rookie Tiago Splitter will see some more minutes and will thus be able to better prepare himself for the playoffs. Splitter, 26, is the reigning Spanish League MVP and was the Spurs' marquee signing last summer. When Duncan went out of the game on Monday, Splitter came in and got a double-double. But that didn't get to Splitter's ego.
"I've been working for this all season. I'm ready," Splitter said. "Of course I'm no Tim Duncan. I'm the new guy here who wants to help the team."
