Swine Flu Outbreak Reported in Venezuela

Venezuelan officials have confirmed an outbreak of the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, has occurred in the state of Merida. Health Minister Eugenia Sader said more than 100 cases of the virus have been confirmed. Sader said fewer than 2 perfect of H1N1 cases would be serious enough for intense medical treatment.

Local media reports at least 3 people have died, but those reports have not been confirmed by officials. Sader urged anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to remain in their home.

In an effort to put a stop to the virus spreading, officials have ordered Merida schools to close for the next five days. A ban has also been placed on certain types of events.
