ARE YOU PART OF THE CURE OR ARE YOU PART OF THE DISEASE?

The Epidemic of Drug Use

The news lately has focused much attention on drug usage and it has been called an epidemic.  In my opinion it truly is an epidemic. Epidemic is defined as “a rapid spread or increase in the occurrence of something.” Isn’t that exactly what has been going on around us? Pills and drugs being used much more frequently and prescribed to the masses with millions of people affected and inflicted with addiction is an epidemic.

The epidemic runs deeper than we know with pharmaceutical companies creating drugs that are supposed to cure or aid some form of malady but end up plaguing the user with ghastly side effects or even fatality. I see it all the time.  A child diagnosed with ADD and then prescribed Adderall.  Then the child has trouble sleeping at night and is prescribed something else in addition for sleep.  Maybe he should simply be taken off the speed. It seems like our society wants a quick fix and it comes in pill form.

I see the epidemic everyday and if you open your eyes you will see it too. The epidemic has no mercy, for addiction can affect anyone from any background.  You see the man on the side of the road holding the sign for money and his face emaciated from the epidemic.  You see celebrities such as Charlie Sheen, Courtney Love, Lindsay Lohan, and many more publicly affected by the epidemic.  Also, sadly, any person suffering from addiction has a family or friends that suffer watching them destroy themselves.

I am beginning to wonder why so few people reach out for help for their addiction.  I am beginning to question why so few people confront their family members about their addiction.  You are only part of the disease when you pretend that the epidemic does not exist around you.  There is something you can do to be a part of the cure.
