UN Backs Offensive Against Ugandan Rebels

In an attempt to force the Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony to sign a peace deal a United Nations envoy has backed the recent offensive against his Lord’s Resistance Army.

Kony has led his LRA rebels in a two-decades long battle against government troops in northern Uganda but the group had been involved in peace talks for some time. Wanted by the International Criminal Court, Kony has said he would not sign any peace deal until he was guaranteed arrests warrants for him and other members of the LRA were dropped.

While Kony has been launching attacks in northern Uganda he has been hiding in the north-east Democratic Republic of Congo territory of Garamba. On Sunday the governments of Uganda, DR Congo and Sudan sent troops into the area to engage Kony’s rebels in an attempt to drive the leader out.
