Powerful Earthquake Hits Northeast Myanmar, No Damage Reported

A powerful earthquake struck northeast Myanmar Thursday night. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 6.8 magnitude tremor had a depth of 6 miles and was located near Myanmar’s borders with Thailand, Laos and China. The epicenter was located about 70 miles from Chiang Rai, Thailand and 364 miles from Myanmar’s capital of Rangoon. A less powerful 4.8 magnitude tremor hit the area about 30 minutes after the first.

The first tremor was felt as far away as Bangkok, which is located about 480 miles from the epicenter. Minor damage was reported in Thailand. There were no immediate reports of damage in Myanmar, Laos or China.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center shot down any fears of a tsunami saying the first earthquake was “located too far inland and too deep inside the earth to generate a tsunami in the Indian Ocean.”
