Six months from today, a new golf championship pitting men against women and amateurs against professionals, will take place in Carlsbad, California. The tournament is the first annual U.S. Putting Tour Championship and golfers will compete for a first prize of $10,000.
The championship is the culmination of the inaugural season of the putting tour, which will hold events nationwide to qualify golfers for the national finals. Golfers also can enter the championship directly by going to the U.S. Putting Tour website.
"We're excited by the response we're getting from golfers in the U.S. and abroad," said USPT founder, Jim Hartley. "Everyone likes the idea of being able to compete head-to-head for a national golf championship without handicaps or divisions."
Hartley went on to say that amateur golfers can opt to compete as amateurs by signing a waiver prior to the start of the
putting championship. Top finishing amateurs will receive merchandise prizes and vouchers. All golfers will compete for the USPT Championship trophy and the title of America's Best Putter.
The
putting tournament will run for seven days, September 24-30. Golfers will play on no more than three of the days. The
putting event is being held at The Crossings at Carlsbad, the newest course in the coastal north county area of San Diego.
All golfers 13 years of age and older are eligible to compete in the tournament. PGA club professionals who host qualifying events can gain an exemption into the second round of the championship.
