The Indianapolis Colts (10-4) have rattled off seven straight wins and could lock up a spot in the AFC playoffs on Thursday night when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-9) at Jacksonville Stadium.
While the Colts have won seven straight they haven’t exactly been facing the NFL’s elite over the past five weeks. To start the streak they knocked off the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers by a total of seven points and then beat the Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions.
Indianapolis has plenty of motivation for Thursday night’s matchup as a win would not only put them in the playoffs but would also be a bit of revenge for a Week 3 loss to the Jaguars that dropped them to 1-2.
Peyton Manning has led the resurgence for the Colts as he finally appears comfortable after missing the entire preseason. Of course he’s had his familiar targets Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne to haul in his passes but Harrison will miss Thursday night after getting an MRI. That shouldn’t be too bad for Manning though as Dallas Clark was huge in last Sunday’s win against the Lions with 142 yards receiving and a TD.
Indy has also used a balanced running attack from Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes to complement the passing game. While Addai’s Week 11 game against the Texas was the only game in which the Colts had a hundred-yard rusher (105), the two backs have been splitting time and been very good as a pass option for Manning.
As for Jacksonville, the 2008 campaign has been one of disappointment as nobody thought they would be in the AFC South cellar. After dropping their first two games of the year they evened their record at 2-2 and were 3-3 after their next two games but then quickly fell apart. Their win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Jaguars offense has been nothing short of awful this year as they have averaged 19.4 points per game and have only scored more than 19 point s twice in the past eight games.
Indianapolis would seal a playoff berth with a win on Thursday as it would give them an 11-4 record with an 8-2 mark in the conference. Even if they were to lose next week to the Tennessee Titans and they would hold a tie-breaker over any other wildcard team due to their conference record.
Kickoff for Thursday night’s game is set for 8:15 p.m. ET.
