Dave Smith, a former MLB All-Star closer for the Houston Astros, died on Wednesday in San Diego after suffering a heart attack. Smith was 53.
Smith appeared in the MLB All-Star game twice (1986, 1990), both times in an Astros uniform, and racked up 216 saves over his 13-year career. The hard-throwing right-hander pitched for Houston from 1980-1990 and closed his career with two years in a Chicago Cubs uniform.
Smith ranks second on the Astros all-time saves list with 199 and appeared in 563 games for Houston, a club record.
A statement released by the Houston Astros read, “Dave was an integral part of the club for 11 seasons and will be remembered as an All-Star reliever on the field but most notably as a valued leader, teammate, and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Smith finished his career at 53-53 with a 2.67 ERA. His 216 career saves is #34 on the career saves list.
