A new Canadian study suggests that girls who begin finding friends in the opposite sex at an early age have an increased risk for substance abuse problems.
The study was conducted over a seven year period consisting of 400 female and male participants ranging in age from 12 to 18. The study showed that around early adolescence, some girls tend to begin befriending boys at a fast pace and continued doing so through adolescence at the same pace.
“When getting into the meat of this study one begins to understand the correlation of peer relationships and substance abuse,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “The study showed that some adolescent girls tended to befriend boys who were older and who also went to a different school. The research highlights the need for parents to be vigilant in knowing with whom their teens are associating. If a parent sees that their young daughter is beginning to associate with boys who are older, it’s not necessarily a cause for alarm. However, it should be a subject that is discussed with their daughter so that parents will know more about the friendship.”
