NFL Scores Week 16: Indianapolis Colts Seal Playoff Berth with Win Over Jacksonville Jaguars

Peyton Manning was 29/34 passing for 364 yards and three touchdowns, Reggie Wayne had seven receptions for 108 yards and a TD and Dallas Clark hauled in eight passes for 105 yards and a score as the Indianapolis Colts (11-4) overcame 14-point deficit to knock off the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-10) 31-24 on Thursday night to clinch a playoff berth for the seventh straight season.

Jacksonville opened the game with an impressive drive that was capped by a David Garrard 28-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Northcutt for a 7-0 lead. The Jaguars extended their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run from Garrard and it looked like the Colts playoff hopes would be put on ice.

Manning managed to stop the bleeding with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Wayne and it looked like the Colts would cut their deficit to four when Adam Vinatieri came on for a 30-yard field goal with 1:06 on the clock but he missed wide left and the Jaguars marched down the field and Josh Scobee hit a 44-yard field goal to give Jacksonville a 17-7 advantage at the break.

The Colts pulled to within 17-14 in the third quarter when Manning hit Dominic Rhodes on a 10-yard touchdown pass but the Jaguars reclaimed their ten-point advantage when Montell Owens scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and they carried that lead into the final frame.

Early in the fourth Manning found Clark on a one-yard TD toss and midway through the quarter Vinatieri tied the game with a 45-yard field goal.

While the Colts offense brought the score even it was the Indy defense that gave them their first lead of the game as Keiwan Ratliff picked off Garrard and went 35-yards for a touchdown with 4:48 left in the game.  Jacksonville had a great shot at tying the game in the closing minute as they drove to the Indianapolis 7-yard-line but the Colts defense came up big once again as Dwight Freeney sacked Garrard with seven seconds left on the clock and Jacksonville couldn’t get another play off.

The win locked up the number five spot in the AFC playoffs for the Colts.
