Russian Warships Enter Cuban Waters

Russian warships heading home after completing joint naval exercises with Venezuela have entered Cuban waters, marking the first time Russia has placed military vessels in the island’s waters since the end of the Cold War.

The move is seen as yet another response by Russia to the United States pursuit of a missile defense shield in Europe. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Mikhail Saakashvili have shown a willingness to test the response of the U.S. and while entering Cuban waters won’t result in a direct response it is a strong reminder of a time when the world seemingly stood on the brink of war.

Russia had harsh words for the U.S. decision to build a missile defense shield in Europe, calling it a direct threat to their national security. It was shortly after that they sent several warships to Venezuela to hold joint exercises. Venezuela’s leader, Hugo Chavez, hosted the Russians and held talks in an effort to strengthen relations. Chavez has been one of the most outspoken critics of the U.S. and Russia’s decision to conduct talks with Venezuela was interpreted as a move on the U.S.’s sphere of influence in South America.

Now heading back to Russia, a destroyer and two support ships sailed into Havana Bay for the first time since the former Soviet Union held close ties with its communist ally in the Caribbean.
