A pedestrian bridge at the Piedmont Avenue entrance to
the Atlanta Botanical Gardens collapsed this morning around 9 a.m. Police say
at least 30 people were on the bridge when it collapsed, killing one person and
injuring 18 others.
All of the victims appear to be construction workers. The
workers were pouring concrete for a new canopy walk when the bridge gave way.
"Our hearts go out to the family of the person that
was killed," said Bill Pinto, president of Hardin Construction Company,
which was doing the canopy work.
Four people are in intensive care and two of them are in
very critical condition.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is at
the scene and will investigate whether safety requirements were not followed.
The Atlanta Botanical Gardens are next to Piedmont Park,
which is a popular area for joggers. The bridge was a part of a walking trail.
